2020 Native Plant Sale a Success Despite COVID

Our 2020 Native Plant Sale turned out to be great success despite the challenges of holding an event during the COVID-19 pandemic. In place of the usual plant pick-up day at Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve, Thorn Creek Audubon members volunteered to safely deliver plants to customers.

At the helm was Judy Johnson, who did everything from ordering the plants to organizing how the delivery needed to be done in keeping with guidelines for social distancing and personal protection. Getting the volunteers and all the plants organized and ready for delivery on May 22 was quite a feat! Even the weather cooperated, and we had a lovely day.

Terri Spillers shared her experience as a volunteer delivering plants: "I must say I rather enjoyed delivering the plants and meeting the native gardeners. For some, the plants were an addition to an already extensive native garden. To others, it was a start of a new native area in their gardens.

"I got an invitation to view Nancy’s garden, which was very inviting and charming. There was another invitation to come back at a later date to view the native plant area and raised beds from Paul. One customer, Lynne, has converted her front yard to all native plants with bird feeders. With her phlox in bloom and many visiting birds, it was quite lovely. Yet another customer, Melinda, shared how she raised monarch butterflies last year from her milkweed plants. And lastly, Sue was adding her new plants to an already large native garden. It was fun see familiar faces and so nice to meet new ones."

Thorn Creek Audubon would like to acknowledge and thank our volunteers who participated in this year's extraordinary effort so we could keep our customers, members, and ourselves safe. A special thank you goes to Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve, our Native Plant Sale cosponsor, for hosting us.

To all of you who purchased native plants and trees, thank you for making this year's event a great success for our birds and pollinators.
