Event Type: Bird Walk
Date: Saturday, September 18, 2021
Time: 8:00 am - 10:00 am
Location: Helmick Nature Preserve/Old Plank Rd Trail
Address: Central Ave south of U.S. Rt 30, Matteson, IL Map

Hope you can join us to look for migrating passerines and shorebirds along with resident birds. We’ll walk by marshland, open water, grassy areas, and wooded sections. This August, a Sabine’s Gull, Little Blue Heron, and two Black-necked Stilts stopped here. In September, a Red-necked Phalarope and Little Blue Heron were seen. Maybe we'll be lucky and find another rarity.

We’ll meet at the corner of Central Ave and Miller Circle Drive. Park along the north side of Miller Circle Drive. Note: Miller Circle Drive loops around Matteson Auto Mall and intersects Central Ave twice. Meet at the southern intersection. Map.

The bird hike is on a paved path. There’s a porta potty where the path crosses Ridgeland Ave; however, the walk will not go that far west.

The bird walk is free and open to everyone. New birders are welcome! No registration required.

Leaders: Marlys Oosting and Penny Kneisler
