A 50-Year Milestone for Thorn Creek Audubon

Our first logo

In spring 1972, the newly formed Thorn Creek Audubon Society was working with National Audubon to enroll the 35 new members needed to form an official National Audubon chapter. This dedicated group of local birders was also already seeking forms from National Audubon to establish a count circle for the Christmas Bird Count. Other concerns were organizing field trips, preparing a position paper regarding a proposed local expressway, and how to fund a newsletter.

Fifty years ago - on January 1, 1973 - National Audubon welcomed Thorn Creek Audubon as a new chapter. The first annual bird count on December 30, 1972, was a success with 25 observers taking part. And TCAS has been holding birding programs and supporting conservation projects ever since.

A special THANK YOU to everyone who has enthusiastically helped TCAS over the past 50 years pursue its mission:

  • Promote the enjoyment and appreciation of birds

  • Educate adults and children concerning our natural environment

  • Preserve, protect, and restore wildlife habitat

  • Create awareness of local conservation issues
