Spring Bird Walk Schedule Kicks Off

We were delighted to be able to resume bird walks just in time for spring migration. Groups headed out on two bird hikes in April and three field trips are set for May. For details on upcoming bird walks, check out the Events page.

Birders who joined our first 2021 spring bird walk on April 17 enjoyed a nice mix of birds that frequent the Palos, Ill., area in April. Sightings included early migrants, lingering winter ducks, a nesting Osprey, and spring wildflowers galore.

Among the highlights: Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Brown Creeper, Eastern Phoebes, American Wigeons, and Hooded Mergansers. In all, the group tallied 36 species between McClaughrey Springs Woods and Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center.

Damp weather didn’t deter a small group of enthusiastic birders from exploring Hickory Creek Nature Preserve in Mokena on April 24. Although the cloudy gray sky made it challenging to ID birds that were flitting high in the treetops, species tallied included Yellow-rumped Warbler, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Eastern Towhee, and Eastern Phoebe as well as easier to see woodpeckers, robins, and more.
