Native Plants Donated to Monee Reservoir Preserve
Over 200 plants were recently donated to Monee Reservoir from the Native Plant Sale co-sponsored by Thorn Creek Audubon and Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve. Monee Reservoir is one of Forest Preserve District of Will County's popular preserves.
A preserve work group planted the additions around the visitor center and all along the boat/canoe/kayak rental area. The visitor center & boat area already had a good foundation of shrubs surrounded by wood chips and some clumps of butterfly weed. The new plants were used to fill in these areas.
Judy Johnson (blue shirt) and Angie Opiola checked out some of the new native plants around the visitor center and boat ramp. Judy is a board member of both TCAS and HIWP and the annual native plant sale coordinator. Angie is the Program Coordinator for Monee Reservoir.
Next year, the plants will provide an abundant variety of color and bloom times to feed pollinators and hummingbirds and expand the preserve's displays for its native plant educational programs. Additions to the preserve's native plants include asters, milkweeds, bergamots, and blazing stars.
