If you're looking to help save Monarch Butterflies, look no further than local expert and Thorn Creek Audubon member Kay MacNeil.

The continuing decline of the Monarch Butterfly population is well-documented. One factor contributing to the dramatic loss - the disappearance from Midwest farm fields and residential areas of milkweed, the only plant Monarchs will lay eggs on.

You can help. Protecting the Monarch population is one of the few conservation challenges where each of us can make a difference from our own backyards. How? Plant milkweed!

Need milkweed seeds and information?

Kay, a self-described "seriously deranged lover of caterpillars and butterflies," has everything you need to know on her delightful website: MilkweedForMonarchs.info. Be sure to click on her award winning youtube.com video to see many varieties of milkweed and how to become part of the Raise and Release hobbyists who raise caterpillars in the house. Plus, Kay offers milkweed seeds for the backyard gardener and large properties.

For a $2 cash donation, Kay will send you samples of three kinds of milkweed, planting directions, and informative Monarch literature. For large acreages, Kay invites you to call her and describe your project and the size of the acreage. She will send you an appropriately sized box of common milkweed seed in pods with directions and copies of her handouts. You will simply pay the postage. Yes, Kay will call you. As she says on her website: "I am one of the few people left on earth who really Will call you back! I promise."

To receive samples of three kinds of milkweed, send $2 cash donation and a stamped, self addressed business sized envelope to: Kay MacNeil, 689 Golf Club Lane, Frankfort, Il 60423 Questions? 815-469-1294.
