Birders on the first two bird walks of our fall schedule enjoyed gorgeous weather and a great variety of birds.

The season kicked off Saturday, September 18, at Helmick Nature Preserve / Butterfield Creek Wetlands in Matteson. The group of 17 birders checked out the preserve's marshland, open water, grassy areas, and wooded sections and tallied 56 species. Highlights: American Golden Plover, American Pipit, Peregrine Falcon, and Soras foraging out in the open close to the bike path! Full eBird Checklist

On Saturday, September 25, the destination was Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Preserve in Willow Springs. Eleven birders enjoyed finding 39 species while hiking near the lake and through the woodlands and grassy areas. Highlights: Trumpeter Swan, Pileated Woodpecker, Osprey, American Redstart, and Magnolia Warbler. Full eBird Checklist
