Helmick Early Fall Walk Finds Diverse Birds

The search for fall birds kicked off Sept. 10 at Helmick Nature Preserve in Matteson. A congenial group of 15 birders checked the trees, water, and prairie areas for early migrants, summer nesters, and year-round residents. The preserve's multiple habitats yielded 42 diverse species.

Highlights: juvenile Little Blue Heron, immature Red-shouldered Hawk giving good views, four Wilson's Snipe flying in formation, five warbler species, and an American Bullfrog lounging close to the path. Full eBird checklist
