Volunteer to Watch for Nighthawks

Select your own locations to watch three evenings in June

Common Nighthawks are one of the fastest declining bird species in North America for reasons not yet fully understood. With the help of volunteers, the Chicago Ornithological Society is looking to answer important questions about what nighthawks need to survive and thrive in the metropolitan area. Do you have three free evenings in June to help track them down? Then join in the mission to make the Chicago area a haven for these special creatures!

Volunteers for The Nighthawk Project commit to monitoring four points on three separate evenings between June 11 and July 1. You select your own locations and watch for 5 minutes at each spot, then enter an eBird checklist for each location. No prior experience or knowledge is required to participate.

The project was launched in 2022. Right now, participation in southern Cook County and in Will County is very low. You can help gather vital data for these areas by volunteering.
