October Bird Walk Fun

Seasoned and beginning birders convened for three bird walks this October in Will and Cook counties.

On October 2, several trails were explored at Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve. The impressive group of 18 birders tallied 31 species. Highlights: Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets, Bald Eagle, Belted Kingfishers, and an immature Black-crowned Night Heron. Full eBird Checklist

Our outing October 9 at Goodenow Grove/Plum Creek Nature Center was a fun event. Fourteen birders collaborated to find 35 species. Highlights: an adult & 2 immature Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers and 2 immature & 4 adult Red-headed Woodpeckers. It was a real treat to see these young woodpeckers thriving. Full eBird Checklist

The 13 birders on our walk at the under-birded Wampum Lake preserve on October 16 had a great time tallying 32 species. Highlights included early arrival Juncos, 50 Double-crested Cormorants flying over in V formation, a noisy Belted Kingfisher, Hairy Woodpecker, and White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows.
