Creative Way Young Students Learned About Owls

If you're looking for a fun way to introduce youngsters to birds, check out this project idea from Eileen Ward, Art Teacher at Bryant Elementary and Maya Angelou Elementary in Harvey, Ill.

First, Eileen introduced her students to characteristics and body parts of owls prior to creating owl art. These kindergarteners and first graders learned that owls are nocturnal, and they fly without making any noise. They viewed and compared photographs of owls that are found in Illinois. Some students shared stories of seeing owls near their homes.

Then, the students used paper tearing and paper cutting techniques to create the owl body parts. They assembled feathers, eyes, beaks, and talons to create their owls for a delightful classroom display.
